"We met Capt Clay at the Kaunakakai Wharf at 7:00 am, weather was calm and spectacular. First two fish caught were goat fish then a Papio (yellow spotted trevally). Another goat fish and then a 12 lb gray snapper (Uku), great eating.
What a great day of fishing! Capt Clay is a sensitive, funny and delightful man. We hope to return to fish again on the Hallelujah Hou!"

Bottom Fishing
Molokai's south shore has one of the longest fringing
reefs of all the Hawaiian Islands. This is the method of choice for the majority of
people fishing aboard the Hallelujah Hou as it offers the most variety
of all the other choices of fishing. It is a light tackle sport
so equipment is easier to handle. The Trevally (Papio) is one of
the prized catches that are sought after using this method of fishing.
Weights are usually in the 2- 7 pound sizes. Light spinning gear
is used majority of the time and fish under 10 inches are always
released. The fish are a white fleshed fish that makes good table
fare. Occasionally, a snapper (Uku), goatfish (Weke) or Leatherback
(La'i) may be caught fishing with this technique.
The thrill of a youngster catching his/her first fish is a definite
highlight. Families with children choose this style of fishing,
as the areas fished are usually quite close in proximity to the
wharf in the event that someone needs to return quickly to shore
because of seasickness. Drifting is the preferred method (engines
are turned off) as the vessel is extremely stable at rest, which
makes it pleasant to enjoy the deep blue beauty of the ocean while
fishing. Occasionally other sea creatures like porpoises and sea
turtles (honu) will swim by to check out the boat. You never know
what you will catch while bottomfishing!
Deep sea fishing usually entails a lot heavier
gear than any other type of fishing offered aboard the Hallelujah
Hou because of the sheer size of the game that is being pursued.
The kind of fish that can be caught are Pacific Blue Marlin (A'u),
Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi), Mahimahi (Dorado), Wahoo (Ono) Skipjack Tuna
(Aku). Some of the fish are seasonal like the Wahoo and Yellowfin,
(summer months May-July) while others are occassionally caught all
year long. The usual method is trolling with artificial lures, so
the boat is always moving. Shimano two speed, 30 and 50 size class gear
is normally what is used so the fight can be enjoyed.
Fly fishing the flats off Molokai is a new fishing sensation that many anglers never knew existed. There are huge, double digit Bonefish, Blue-finned Trevally, Barracuda, and some hefty Goatfish ready to put a bend in your rod.
Wading is the preferred method for the majority of anglers; however sight casting from the bow of a flats skiff is also available. The number of anglers is limited to two because of the size of the skiff used. Some gear can be rented for a nominal fee if you are travelling and don't have any gear with you. Stripping baskets are available as well, and is a suggested item to bring along if you are using your own gear.
Eight weight equipment is adequate if you will be bringing your own gear. Good wading shoes are also recommended as there is some coral encountered while wading. Quality polarized glasses are also a must, with amber being the most popular tint.
Wind can be a factor on many of the outings, but the ever-changing conditions are always monitored by the captain to ensure that you have the best opportunity to get that trophy catch.
Average trips range from four to six hours.
Rates are $450 for one angler and an additional $150 for a second.

Trip Details
Fishing charters include tackle, bait, ice, fish cleaning and bagging. You bring: food, drink, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses and a hat. I like to promote catch and release fishing and take pride in putting you on fish whenever possible. You can keep any legal fish and I want you to be able to enjoy a nice dinner. This is not a "meat" fishing charter. I like to specialize in fun, excitement, entertainment, bent rods and most of all, fond memories of your Molokai adventure.
One to four is recommended for serious fishing, as its more comfortable, and provides a more "hands on" interaction.
Deposits
Your charter reservation is confirmed by putting a credit card number on file with me. If you don't want to use a credit card, then a check mailed to me will do. This will confirm your charter date. You may pay with cash or credit card the day of the trip. There is no charge made to your credit card account for your deposit at booking time. If you do choose to pay with your card on the date of fishing, that is fine, just bring the card you want to use, so that I can swipe it in the credit card machine after returning from your trip
Cancellations and No-Shows
All cancellations have to be made no later than 48 hours before the charter date to avoid a $200.00 deposit being charged to your card. If you reschedule your trip there will be no charge for the rebooking. If there is a NO SHOW on your charter day, you will be charged for the rate of the charter that you booked. All of this is necessary because if you don't show up on the date reserved, I could have taken someone else out. There is a minimum of two hours of preparation before each trip to prepare the boat for the next day's trip. Washdown, refueling, ice, tackle prep, all that kind of stuff. I don't like to waste my time.
You will never be charged a cancellation fee if the trip is cancelled due to weather or for any reason on my part, illness, mechanical problems etc. If I do cancel a trip because of weather, I will do my best to reschedule another day of fishing for you if another day is available in the time frame that you have.
